Microneedling is a popular alternative to laser resurfacing.  For those with fairly dark skin (who always tan and rarely or never sunburn), resurfacing can cause unwanted pigmentary changes and microneedling is a safe option for improving the appearance of scars, fine wrinkles, and darker pigment.  The procedure involves an electrical device that

Microneedling procedures are done by our aesthetician.  She will recommend appropriate treatment types, number of sessions and post-procedure instructions.  Special pricing is available, especially if part of a package for the treatment of acne scarring--which may necessitate other types of treatments in addition to the microneedling.

makes tiny holes in the skin at regular intervals.  Unlike laser devices, no heat is generated and the wounds close very quickly. The depth can be adjusted from 0.5 to 2mm depending on the location and the needs of the patient. In all cases a liquid is used to allow for an even placement of the needling holes;  the liquid can vary from plain hyaluronic acid to a commercial growth factor blend, or to platelets which are harvested from the patient on the day of the procedure (platelet-rich plasma).  Each works well, though the results and healing time are superior with platelet-rich plasma (PRP).  The procedure is more labor-intensive with PRP, and so the cost is higher, but better results and faster healing are achieved.

Microneedling is performed with sterile, single-use needle heads and a sterile sleeve around the device.  For harvesting PRP, a single blood draw is taken (much less than for a blood donation) by either our physician or a phlebotomist.

Typically, three or four sessions are required to achieve optimal results.  These are usually spaced at monthly intervals.  Patients are a little red and swollen usually for no more than 24 hours after the procedure.
